The story of the Cornhill Market

Lincoln’s market has a long and varied history. It began in the 16th Century when women would sell their wares of butter, milk, poultry and eggs at the Butter Cross on Newland.

In 2023 the Grade II listed Market underwent extensive redevelopment, with investment from Historic England through the High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) scheme, and a successful bid for funding through the Be Lincoln Town Deal.

The Story of Snips the dog

An application has been submitted for a statue of a beloved local dog, Snips, to sit within Lincoln’s revamped Cornhill Market in the Cornhill Quarter area.

Snips’ owner, market trader Henry Tyler, raised thousands of pounds for good causes by charging people a penny to stroke the terrier during the 1950s. As a result of this fundraising, Snips received numerous awards from the city council and other organisations.

Cllr Naomi Tweddle, Portfolio Holder for Inclusive Economic Growth at City of Lincoln Council, said: “The story of Snips is a beloved one, and we’re so pleased his memory will live on in the redeveloped Cornhill Market. We are always passionate about preserving the building’s heritage and keeping the history alive, so we hope the statue inspires more people who learn about the story and also support a good cause.”

Mayor’s Charity

The City of Lincoln Mayor, Rosanne Kirk, has chosen the Urology Department at Lincoln County Hospital as her dedicated charity this year, in recognition of the amazing work that they do.

It is a long-standing tradition that each year the Mayor of Lincoln chooses a charity to raise awareness of and raise money for. This year the Mayor has chosen United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity, and specifically the hospitals Urology Departments.

Mayor Rosanne Kirk said: “During my mayoral year, I would like to support Lincoln County Hospital. I have chosen the Urology Department, having sadly lost my father to prostate cancer in 2021. This has given me the determination to not only raise funds for the Urology Department, but to raise much-needed awareness of prostate cancer.
